The 2012 Summer movie season officially gets underway this weekend with what is easily one of the biggest releases of the year. After five movies that in many ways functioned as prequel material, some of Marvel’s most-popular superheroes finally team up in The Avengers. Thanks to these lead-in movies and a killer marketing campaign, anticipation has reached nearly-unprecedented levels, and The Avengers is a lock to score one of the highest opening weekends of all-time. It doesn’t compare to the incredible midnight debuts of the last few Harry Potter and Twilight movies, but The Avengers still registered a pretty remarkable $18.7 million at midnight. That’s the eighth-highest midnight opening ever, and it beats The Dark Knight ($18.5 million) for best superhero midnight debut in history. However, with the weekend here, the movie could top over 200 million for the week in gross ticket sales. With a movie so high in anticipation, that means more people will be out to see a movie over the weekend and that spill-over could lead to a boost for all movies.

Below you’ll find the big flicks being released this weekend with their storylines and trailers as well as the top 10 movies in the U.S.A.
