Prince Harry Is Coming to America Much Earlier Than We Expected—Find Out Why
Virginia is for lovers—and royals, too.
Prince Harry is headed to to the so-called “mother of states” on Wednesday to attend an event in support of the Invictus Games Orlando 2016, which take place in May. Per Kensington Palace, Harry will join First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden at Fort Belvoir military base, where they’ll meet with wounded servicemen and women in recovery and rehabilitation programs.
The prince, who is Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, as well as Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden, both major supporters of our service members and veterans, will take a tour of the USO Warrior and Family Center. They will also watch a short adaptive sports event which is similar to one that will be part of the Invictus Games in the spring.
Per a release from Kensington Palace, this visit will also highlight the importance of mental health and supporting programs for veterans suffering from “invisible injuries” like PTSD.
In the same visit, Harry will attend an an Invictus Games board meeting and reception at the British Ambassador’s home in Washington, D.C. Launched in 2014, the Invictus Games are a Paralympic-style competition for injured servicemen and women. Upon originally announcing the initiative in London, Harry joked that the Warrior Games, a Paralympic-style competition in the U.S., was “such a good idea by the Americans that it had to be stolen.”
The inaugural Invictus Games took place in London in 2014. The Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will take place May 8-12 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
