Prince Number 1 on Billboard Artist 100 Chart
The late legend is the top musical act in the U.S., re-entering at No. 1 following his passing April 21.
Prince reigns as the top musical act in the United States, re-entering the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated May 7) at No. 1. The icon rules the chart for the first time, following his death April 21.
The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard’s most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Following his passing, Prince returns to the Artist 100 at the summit after he had previously peaked at No. 16 in 2014, the year that the chart launched. (He had last graced the list dated Oct. 25, 2014.) Sadly, he is the second act to earn top honors posthumously, as David Bowie led the Jan. 30 chart following his death Jan. 10.
Prince sports a staggering 13,480 percent gain in overall activity, with album sales accounting for nearly half his Artist 100 points. Digital song sales follow at 38 percent, with radio airplay a distant third (8 percent). Prince boasts the two best-selling albums of the week, The Very Best of Prince (100,000 in traditional sales, up 11,232 percent, according to Nielsen Music) and the Purple Rain soundtrack (63,000 sold, up 3,101 percent), and the top-selling song, the latter set’s title track (122,000, up 7,576 percent).
As previously noted, fans rushed to purchase Prince’s music in the roughly half-day left in the sales tracking week ending April 21, after the news of his death broke around 1 p.m. ET. We will see continued impact from his passing on next week’s charts, dated May 14 (reflecting activity in the week ending April 28).
Below Prince on the Artist 100, Justin Bieber holds at No. 2 after 11 (nonconsecutive) weeks on top, the most among males; Drake (3-3) and Rihanna (4-4) are also stationary; and Meghan Trainor rises 8-5.
