Watch Jhene Aiko’s Insanely Sexy ‘Maniac’ Video
Jhene Aiko explores her manic side in the creepy, freaky visual for “Maniac.” Directed by Aiko herself along with Top Shelf Junior, the clip finds the singer straddling a mannequin, gagged and restrained in a hospital bed and locked inside a cage.
Aiko tells Rolling Stone of the video’s inspiration, “When I started putting together the concept for the ‘Maniac’ visual, I wanted to explore what it meant to be manic.” She also implemented her research on old asylums and patient treatments into the video. “I learned that lots of women were admitted for absurd reasons, including being ‘nymphomaniacs,’ and were basically tortured in the name of treatment.”
The singer, who is prepping her forthcoming album, notes that the sexually driven single was released at a time where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “I think we all have some sort of imbalance, but I also believe that we can overcome it. I find my balance through creating art. The ‘Maniac’ visual is the story of a mental patient who finds her own cure.”
